Job Duties
To develop, oversee and supervise clinicians in the delivery of a well-coordinated program of occupational therapy interventions, which enable individuals to function more independently in the community.
To support the hospital’s mission of actively promoting the recovery of individuals with serious mental illness using safe, efficient, and effective services by providing quality inpatient treatment through the implementation of the hospital’s Compliance and Quality Management program. To fully support the individuals at SVMHI, this position has been designated as essential to SVMHI operations.
The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental services support individuals by promoting recover, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services. DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians. This position will work at SVMHI is a 72-bed, Joint Commission and CMS accredited inpatient psychiatric hospital operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
This position will work Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm with flexibility for evenings and weekends as indicated.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy (MOT/MSOT) and/or Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD) from an accredited School of Occupational Therapy.
Current certification as a Registered Occupational Therapist by NBCOT.
Current, and in good standing, license of Occupational Therapy through the VA Department of Health Professions.
Prior experience working as an OT staff.
A valid driver’s license is required and must remain valid throughout employment.
This position will also require:
Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods used in Occupational Therapy.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of basic statistics.
Ability to evaluate and report progress of individuals served.
Ability to work collaboratively with other employees and guide students and volunteers.
Ability to plan and administer facility wide OT services in coordination with other treatment programs.
Knowledge of management techniques.
Additional Considerations
Work/internship experience dealing with various types of mental and physical disorders, people of all ages, and experience in evaluating, establishing treatment intervention, and assessing effectiveness of treatment interventions
Experience in supervision and evaluation of OT staff
Prior experience working in a psychiatric setting
Veterans and people with National Service
Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English
