Job Duties

Work NASCAR Events & Create Highway Safety Content

Events + Social Media + Highway Safety Campaigns = Your Summer

Think internships are all desk work? Not this one. You'll be at NASCAR events with Ross Chastain, running speed ladder demos, creating social content, and working Virginia's busiest highway safety outreach season. If you want an internship where you're out in the field as much as you're at your desk, keep reading.

Why Highway Safety Office?

Summer is peak season for highway safety campaigns—think "100 Safest Days of Summer," community events, and high-profile activations. We need someone who can juggle event logistics, create compelling social content, and keep our campaigns running smoothly during the busiest time of year.

The Project: Highway Safety Office Outreach & Communications

Support DMV's highway safety campaigns through event execution, social media, and program coordination.

You'll rotate between three main areas: field events, digital content creation, and campaign operations.

What You'll Actually Do:

Outreach & Event Support (The Fun Part):

  • Support speed ladder demonstrations (3 launches planned for summer 2026)

  • Work NASCAR events with Ross Chastain

  • Staff community safety tables and awareness campaigns

  • Run event logistics, setup, and on-site coordination

  • Engage directly with the public at activations

  • Capture photos, videos, and content for recaps

  • Track event metrics and support reporting

Social Media & Content Creation:

  • Draft social posts aligned with active safety campaigns

  • Create graphics with evergreen highway safety messaging

  • Maintain editorial calendar coordinating with campaign timelines

  • Gather content from events and partner activations

  • Keep safety messaging timely and consistent across channels

Campaign Operations & Support:

  • Track materials, deadlines, and approvals for outreach activities

  • Organize event supplies and maintain promotional inventory

  • Coordinate meeting notes and campaign planning follow-ups

  • Support program managers during peak outreach season, often through attending events

Your Portfolio When You're Done:

  • Social media content with engagement metrics

  • Event photography and video from high-profile activations

  • Graphics and digital assets you created

  • Documented experience at NASCAR and community events

  • Campaign coordination and logistics experience

Resume Translation: "Coordinated highway safety outreach events and social media campaigns during peak season, including NASCAR activations and multi-launch speed demonstrations"

Why This Experience Matters:

You'll Learn:

  • Event planning and execution in fast-paced environment

  • Social media strategy for public safety campaigns

  • Content creation under real deadlines

  • How to engage the public on safety messaging

  • Campaign coordination across multiple stakeholders

  • Both the creative and operational sides of outreach

You'll Build:

  • A portfolio showing event work, social content, and campaign experience

  • Skills in both digital marketing and in-person engagement

  • Understanding of how public safety campaigns reach audiences

  • Network with highway safety and communications professionals

The Reality: This is peak season. It's busy, it's varied, and you won't be bored. Some days you're creating content at your desk; other days you're at a NASCAR event or setting up a speed ladder demo. If you like variety and action, this is your internship.
