Job Duties

The Goal of the Virginia Department of Health is to become the healthiest state in the nation. This position will support the VDH Goal of becoming the healthiest state in the nation by continuing to support and improve the health of all Virginians through efficient and effective execution of operations and delivery of services, performing work based on assigned duties and performance measures.

This position is based at the Scott County Health Department located in Gate City, Virginia.

Provides guidance to clients by a knowledge of social and vocational case management and counseling methods to develop individualized service plans, perform psychosocial assessments to determine personal, social, health and economic needs. Assists clients by independently identifying and referring them to available federal, state, local, private resources to assist with their needs. Educates clients on clinical, medical procedures and coordinates client care with PHN and community resources. Requires Licensed Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker or a baccalaureate or master's degree in social work from an accredited social work school or program approved by the Council on Social Work Education or a doctorate in social work per Code of Virginia § 54.1-3709

Minimum Qualifications

 Comprehensive knowledge and skills related to the role of a social worker in a
public health setting
 Knowledge of social and economic conditions related to psychosocial health
and the principles and practices of medical social work
 Ability to provide standard mental health assessments and facilitate
appropriate supportive services
 Ability to exercise sound judgement, analyze and problem solve, organize and
establish priorities
 Requires excellent oral and written communication skills; must be able to
work on a team as a member and/or facilitator
 Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment to assure
compliance with appropriate timelines
 Licensed Social Workers, or Social Workers with a baccalaureate or master's
degree in social work from an accredited social work school or program
approved by the Council on Social Work Education, or a doctorate in social
work required per Code of Virginia § 54.1-3709.

Additional Considerations

 Previous experience in an early intervention program
 Experience working with diverse cultures
 Must be able to provide own transportation for on-duty travel
 Knowledge of Part C Local System; knowledge of Part C regulations;
knowledge of IDEA and/or the Infant & Toddler Connection program; home
visitation experience; experience working with parents of young children
 Qualifying Bachelor’s degree with corresponding license or certification in:
Allied Health; Child and Family Studies; Counseling; Early Childhood; Early
Childhood Growth and Development; Early Childhood Special Education;
Human Development; Human Services; Music Therapy; Nursing; Psychology;
Public Health; Social Work; Special Education – hearing impairments
