Job Duties
Do you have a knack for getting groups to work together toward a common goal? Are you hard to rattle, even when something doesn’t go as planned? Do you appreciate the importance of minute details? Does a planning spreadsheet give you goosebumps? If so, keep reading.
Throughout the year, the Science Museum of Virginia takes the discovery and turns it up a notch with special events that are so awesome, they bring the community together and are often a guest’s introduction to the Science Museum. But these events don’t just happen. They are carefully planned, managed and executed. And we’re looking for a special person to coordinate these events. Someone who is ready to make an impact on some of the Science Museum’s largest undertakings each year.
From monthly Science After Dark events and annual festivals, to decades-long traditions and pilot programs, the Science Museum Events Coordinator will be the programmatic and project management lead for Science Museum events. As part of the Education team, you will develop events with a keen focus on programming designed to engage guests and create experiences that encourage curiosity and discovery. You will manage the nuts and bolts that lead to great events including event contracts and budgets, scheduling, procurement, staffing and volunteer support, and interdepartmental communication. And because a good scientist always records results, you will establish and track goals for events with an eye toward audience growth, particularly with audiences that are not regularly attending public programs. Your event planning skills will also be on display for internal Science Museum events. Working with our culture committee, you’ll help plan events for staff to celebrate, recharge, learn and play together. This position is Monday–Friday position with frequent evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
Long story short, if you enjoy helping people create memories while learning something new, love STEM and are a rockstar planner, then we want to hear from you. Interested candidates must apply at www.jobs.virginia.gov
Benefits
The position offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, FSA, HRA, HSA, life insurance, 457 and pension plan, short and long-term disability and employee assistance program. The Science Museum has a generous paid time off policy, including vacation leave, four days family & personal leave, eight sick days per year and 13 paid holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of customer service and/or supervisory experience, preferably in a museum, science center, or similar environment with progressive responsibility. Demonstrated supervisory and project management experience including the ability to manage, motivate, and oversee volunteers and paid staff, as well as develop, implement, and evaluate programs with budget and personnel management responsibilities.
Candidates must possess strong time-management, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to coordinate admissions operations, oversee event-related services, troubleshoot issues in a fast-paced environment, and manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines. Event management experience and knowledge of event best practices are essential.
Working knowledge of PC software, including G-Suite, Ticketure, and multi-line phone systems along with familiarity with basic A/V equipment for presentations and state safety procedures and protocols. The ability to confidently give tours and present to large groups is essential, as is a demonstrated commitment to delivering superior guest service while working effectively with children, families, adults, colleagues, and external partners.
