Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Taxation’s Office of Information Technology is seeking a motivated Jr. Cloud Engineer to join our team. This role is essential in supporting our hybrid infrastructure, focusing on the deployment, maintenance, and security of AWS cloud resources. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in Linux systems, infrastructure automation, and a strong commitment to maintaining high security and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities
Hybrid Infrastructure Support: Perform day-to-day administration of core AWS services (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda). Use Terraform (IaC) to automate provisioning, manage backups for data integrity, and monitor performance to ensure high availability and rapid incident resolution. Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to provide rapid incident resolution and ensure 24/7 high availability of critical agency services.
Cloud Security & Compliance: Manage Network ACLs, Security Groups, and IAM roles using the principle of least privilege. Monitor security posture via AWS Security Hub and GuardDuty, and support remediation efforts to meet IRS 1075, NIST 800-53, and SEC 530 standards.
Technical Project Implementation: Provide hands-on support through the IT project lifecycle. Deploy cloud resources based on architectural standards, develop technical documentation (network diagrams and runbooks), and troubleshoot bottlenecks during project rollouts.
Collaboration & Tier-2/3 Support: Act as a technical liaison between business units and infrastructure teams. Translate complex cloud concepts for non-technical stakeholders and provide prompt resolution for cloud-related service requests.
This position is located in our Central Office in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule.
The anticipated hiring salary is 85,000, commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Proven knowledge, skill and ability in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Professional experience with AWS Cloud Services and hybrid connectivity (VPC, Subnets, Gateways).
Working knowledge of Windows and Linux systems administration.
Hands-on experience using Terraform or similar IaC tools for resource automation.
Proficiency in Python or Bash for routine task automation.
Strong understanding of foundational networking (TCP/IP, DNS, Route Tables) and network security.
Additional Considerations
AWS Certifications: (e.g., AWS Certified SysOps Administrator or AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner).
Compliance Awareness: Experience working within regulated environments (IRS 1075, NIST, or similar).
Communication: Proven ability to document technical processes and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
