The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (VIDC) is seeking a well-rounded, dynamic IT professional to join the agency’s statewide IT support team as our Information Security Specialist. The VIDC is dedicated to protecting and defending the rights and dignity of clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy. The IT department is equally dedicated to this mission. This recruitment seeks to fill this position with a motivated, creative-thinking information security professional seeking a mission-oriented career opportunity. The Information Security Specialist reports to the Director of Information Technology and is employed at-will.
Duties:
- Function as ISO designee and liaison with Virginia Information Technology Agency Centralized ISO and Audit Services.
- Regular attendance to monthly VITA ISO meetings and any other certifying events required by the state to maintain an ISO designation.
- Ensure completion of necessary tasks, processes, and deliverables to keep the agency compliant with SEC-530 guidelines, including:
Risk assessments
SOP documentation
Baseline configurations
System security plans
Continuity of Operations (COOP) documentation
Business impact assessments
IT audits
- Monitor and configure the Security Awareness Training platform for the agency.
- Develop and implement IT security training curriculum.
- Monitor security alerts and incidents from various enterprise systems.
- Work directly with other IT staff members to resolve information security findings.
- Backfill other IT staff as necessary as a fully functional member of our IT support team.
- This position is on site at our Administrative office and reports directly to the CIO. This position will be expected to perform other project and ad hoc duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
This position involves drafting, reviewing, and submitting important documentation that directly influences our Agency’s security posture, so excellent writing and communication skills are a must. Qualified candidates must have demonstrated proficiency with information security best practices and terminology. Certifications or four-year coursework specifically in Information Security can be substituted for experience in an information security role.
Considerable experience as an IT professional with a focus on information security
Sufficient prior work experience in an Information Security role in order to demonstrate proficiency
The ability to translate complex technical solutions into lay terms, both in writing and verbally
The ability to self-educate and research a problem is required
The ability to lift and maneuver 50lbs is a must
Candidates must possess a valid DMV driver’s license and have the ability to drive to field offices throughout the commonwealth
Excellent customer service skills that bolster the agency’s mission through responsive interactions with customers across the Commonwealth
Timely follow through on task assignments and project duties
Regular attendance and physical presence in the office are required
Relevant information security certifications are preferable.
