Job Duties
The Deputy Director manages agency staff, oversees agency research projects and training programs, conducts analysis, and assists the Director in all matters internal and external to the agency. The Deputy Director is responsible for ensuring the application of appropriate research methodologies for studies on sentencing, recidivism, and other criminal justice topics, and for accurate interpretation of the results. The Deputy Director also assesses the impact of proposed legislative and executive policy changes. The individual in this position often performs research and statistical analysis for Commission research projects and prepares written reports and visual presentations of findings. He or she oversees all aspects of the Commission’s sentencing guidelines training programs and data quality control process. The Deputy Director is called upon to provide technical assistance to, and conduct oral presentations for, a wide array of court stakeholders and policy makers. This individual must represent the agency in a highly professional manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have at least three years of experience in the supervision of professional staff. The most competitive candidates also will have at least three years of experience in managing large-scale research projects. Significant prior experience in conducting research and policy analysis on criminal justice topics is required. Demonstrated proficiency in social science research methods and in the application of descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques is necessary. An ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences is essential. Knowledge of the judicial/criminal justice system is critical and knowledge of Virginia’s system is strongly preferred.
Excellent time management skills are needed for this position. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is essential. This includes communicating technical aspects clearly and concisely to individuals from non-technical backgrounds.
A college degree in a social science discipline required (advanced degree is preferred).
Additional Considerations
Experience with the application of statistical analysis software such as PASW (SPSS) or SAS, is strongly preferred. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point software.
