The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is looking to hire a Weigh Station Technician at the Stephens City Motor Carrier Service Center (MCSC)!
As a Weigh Station Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of motorists and protecting Virginia’s highways by monitoring and inspecting overweight and oversized trucks. You’ll work alongside State Police, local law enforcement, and other officials to enforce safety and weighing policies and procedures related to Virginia’s size and weight laws.

The Weigh Station Technician ensures the enforcement of commercial vehicle size and weight regulations on Virginia’s highways, contributing to the safety of motorists and protecting the integrity of Virginia’s highways, bridges, and tunnels. This role exists to monitor commercial vehicle activity at weigh stations, issue citations for violations of size and weight laws, ensure compliance with state and federal laws, and coordinate with law enforcement personnel. The Weigh Station Technician is responsible for monitoring the functionality and accuracy of equipment to ensure that proper operational standards are upheld and support DMV's mission of safeguarding lives and serving the motoring public.
Training will be provided. The position will work the midnight shift, and may be required to work rotating shifts on a 24/5 schedule. A shift differential of three percent will be added to the base salary.

Minimum Qualifications
• Proficient in data analysis, identifying operational gaps, and developing solutions to improve compliance and efficiency.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for engaging with staff, vendors, and customers, with the ability to explain complex regulations.
• Skilled in using technical systems like IRIS, Microsoft Office, and DMV databases for operations, reporting, and tracking.
• Perform accurate inspections, financial transactions, and report generation to ensure compliance.
Additional Considerations
• Enhanced knowledge of Virginia's Motor Carrier Size, Weight, and Equipment Regulations, as well as related state and federal laws applicable to commercial vehicle operations.
• Understanding of the Motor Carrier Size and Weight Manual, DMV policies, and procedures, i.e. collecting Liquidated Damages, examining Hauling Permits, and IFTA, IRP, and UCR documents.
• Knowledge of truck weighing policies and procedures.
• Ability to interpret, explain, and apply complex material, such as Motor Vehicle Code and Commercial Vehicle Operations, ensuring compliance.
• Knowledge of fuel sampling techniques, including detecting dyed fuel for tax evasion, and maintaining chain-of-custody.
• Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the ability to interpret and apply financial data in budgeting and financial reporting.
• Knowledge of customer service principles, particularly handling complex DMV transactions like license reinstatements and citations.
• Strong understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures for operating weigh stations and identifying unsafe working conditions.
• Ability to handle expenditures and Station activities, ensuring financial and operational efficiency.
