Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is currently seeking a Human Resource professional to plan, implement, and manage a comprehensive human resource program that provides support, training, guidance, and consultative services on Human Resource issues to managers, supervisors, and employees at Nottoway Correctional Center, Supervises and/or performs all human resource, timekeeping, payroll transactions, and employee relations functions for a major institution.

This position consults with managers on issues related to staffing, policy compliance, organizational development/management, as well as directs the work of paraprofessional and professional staff engaged in activities such as recruitment, compensation management, benefits administration, payroll processing and internal and external employee relations. Provides guidance and assistance to employees, supervisors, and managers in a variety of human resource functions to ensure compliance with State and departmental policy and procedures. Manages and organizes automated and manual files in order that information can be retrieved timely and accurately.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable working knowledge of human resources principles and practices of human resource management including EEO/ADA/FLSA/FMLA, Classification and Compensation, Recruitment, Leave and Benefits, Grievance Procedure, and Performance Appraisal. Considerable working knowledge of human resources policies, procedures, and organizational functions. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement multiple human resources functions for a variety of job classifications, supervise the work of paraprofessionals, to communicate effectively orally and in writing with department heads, employees, and others. Demonstrated ability to analyze, counsel, and recommend resolution of employee relation’s problems, classification and compensation issues, training needs, and employment and recruitment requirements and take appropriate actions. Strong interpersonal skills.

Additional Considerations

Have basic knowledge of computers and computer software i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) systems private sector or state specific i.e., PageUp. Professional HR Certification (Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) or Human Resources Standards Institute (HRCI).
