Job Duties

Monitors the grievance procedure in its entirety (informal complaints, emergency grievances, and regular grievances) to ensure compliance with the Department of Corrections policy. Conducts investigations of inmate grievances. Consults with staff and inmates to resolve problems/issues and to investigate claims. Meets with inmates as needed. Prepares responses for correspondence as required by the Operations Manager. May coordinates access to the Law Library and the Institutional Attorney.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have considerable knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) operations, policies, and procedures, as well as knowledge of federal and state laws related to incarcerated individuals’ rights. Demonstrated experience conducting interviews and investigations, researching issues, analyzing data, and clearly presenting findings is required. Applicants must be able to provide guidance to inmates, interpret and apply written and oral regulations, and maintain effective working relationships. Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently complete work assignments with minimal supervision are essential.

Additional Considerations

experience working within correctional, criminal justice, or legal environments; prior involvement with grievance processes, conflict resolution, or administrative investigations; and experience coordinating inmate services such as law library access or legal resources. Strong written communication skills, familiarity with data tracking systems, and experience engaging with diverse populations in challenging or structured settings are also beneficial. Experience with a history of independently managing complex caseloads or handling sensitive information with discretion.
