Job Duties

Do you have experience in mining, health safety, conservation, reclamation, or related training fields? Then look no further! Virginia Energy, Mineral Mining program, is seeking a Compliance/Assistance Specialist to advance safe and environmentally sound mining of Virginia’s mineral resources through the enforcement of laws and regulations. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting safety and reclamation inspections for compliance, investigating complaints and accidents, providing operator assistance in the areas of safety and reclamation, and providing training to mine operators and mine workers within the assigned area.

Minimum Qualifications
• General knowledge of mining reclamation practices, mine safety and health standards, conservations, reclamation, or related teaching/training fields
• Knowledge of adult education principles
• Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Ability to work without close supervision and make sound independent decisions
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to interact effectively with individuals and groups
• Ability to perform physical tasks in the field (i.e., stooping, crawling, climbing, bending, walking for long distances over rough terrain, working in confined spaces and heights)
• Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
Additional Considerations
• Degree in engineering, natural or environmental sciences or another relevant field

Preference will be given to candidates residing within 50 miles of Dickenson, Russell, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, or Wise counties, though applicants from other Area 1 counties will also be considered.
Occasional overnight travel and frequent field work are required for this role within assigned areas of Area 1, including Bland, Buchanan, Dickenson, Giles, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise.
Must obtain the Mineral Mine Inspector certification within 6 months of the start date.
