Are you passionate about creating unforgettable experiences in inspiring spaces? The Science Museum of Virginia is seeking a motivated and highly organized Special Events Coordinator to help bring extraordinary events from birthday parties to weddings and corporate events to life. The Special Events Coordinator plays a key role in planning and executing a wide variety of museum events, programs, tours and facility rentals. This position works closely with internal and external teams, vendors, and clients to ensure every event runs smoothly while maintaining high standards for creativity, service, and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages and backgrounds in an educational environment. Candidates must be able to understand and support the Science Museum’s mission, activities, services, and programs while appropriately interpreting and applying museum policies and procedures for guests and clients. The position requires a reliable, honest, and self-motivated individual who can work independently with minimal supervision. The successful candidate must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, contractors, and members of the public while consistently exercising professionalism, tact, and diplomacy.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to plan, schedule, and execute facility setups according to instructions and communicate effectively with a diverse group of clients. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage responsibilities independently are essential. Proven experience providing outstanding customer service is required. The position also requires strong computer skills, including proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel. Candidates must be able to handle cash and credit card transactions and follow established cash control procedures. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required. First Aid/CPR Certification is required or willingness to obtain upon hire. Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.

Additional Considerations

Basic working knowledge of audio-visual and lighting equipment is preferred.
