Job Duties
The Science Museum of Virginia seeks a dynamic individual to work in The MiX as a part-time MiX Mentor to our teen members. The MiX, is a (free) membership based, teens-only space within the Science Museum of Virginia that encourages deeper engagement in STEM disciplines through a hands-on, maker-based environment.
As a MiX Mentor, you’ll facilitate engaging, inquiry-based activities and guide teens ranging ages 13-18 as they build skills, confidence, and curiosity. Mentors lead weekend programming during the school year and weekday programming in the summer, while serving as positive near-peer role models who help teens explore college and career pathways. You’ll also occasionally support exciting museum events like Science After Dark, Forge workshops, and out-of-school-time outreach.

Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided. Interested applicants must apply at http://jobs.virginia.gov/
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have experience working with teens in informal educational settings, with demonstrated STEM content knowledge and the ability to deliver engaging STEM classes, workshops, and activities. Proven experience supporting youth from low-income and at-risk populations. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills required. Experience in informal science or art programming and/or grades 6–12 education essential. Previous experience mentoring youth and supporting teens from low-income and at-risk populations is a plus. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
Additional Considerations
A valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license is a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite (or comparable video/audio editing software) strongly is a plus. Experience managing or creating content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter is a plus.
