Job Duties

The purpose of this position is to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the facility’s water and wastewater treatment systems. The Treatment Plant Operator supports the Appalachian CCAP by maintaining reliable production of potable water and effective wastewater treatment, in accordance with all Federal and State regulatory requirements. This role is essential to protecting the health and safety of staff and residents, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring continuity of facility operations through proper system monitoring, maintenance, laboratory analysis, and accurate documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

The Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities, including conducting required laboratory analyses and maintaining accurate documentation. The position ensures the delivery of safe, potable water and that all wastewater effluent complies with applicable Federal and State regulatory standards. Candidates should have general knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant operations and related control regulations, as well as experience operating mechanical equipment, performing routine adjustments, and completing minor repairs. The role requires the ability to conduct, interpret, and document laboratory tests accurately, follow safety practices, and maintain detailed operational records and reports. Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a plant operations environment are essential.

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a correctional or institutional environment, familiarity with automated or SCADA-controlled treatment systems, and additional training or certification beyond the minimum licensing requirements. Candidates who demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills, the ability to troubleshoot mechanical or process issues, and a history of reliable shift work may be especially suited for this role. Experience with preventative maintenance programs, environmental compliance reporting, or advanced laboratory testing techniques is also beneficial.
