The DGS Office of Surplus Property Management (OSPM) is seeking an Operations Assistant to provide efficient and effective warehouse activities, create GovDeals listings, and provide customer support as needed to facilitate the state and federal surplus property programs.

OSPM oversees the Commonwealth’s state and federal surplus property management programs in accordance with Virginia Code §2.2-1124. This responsibility encompasses the distribution, warehousing, inventory, allocation, reutilization, and disposal of all Commonwealth surplus property, as required by law. By providing effective and efficient surplus property support services, OSPM advances the Department’s strategic plan and helps Commonwealth entities fulfill their missions. OSPM ensures compliance with surplus property laws through the development and management of statewide processes, policies, and procedures governing both state and federal surplus programs.

Job duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Receive, verify, repair, and transfer property, and register discrepancies according to established procedures.
  • Properly log State and Federal surplus assets using Asset Works Management Platform.
  • Create appropriate lots, take pictures of property, and create Gov Deals listings.
  • Assist customers in obtaining assets brought off Gov Deals after obtaining signed Bill of Sale.
  • Perform maintenance and cleanup of Surplus property facility and equipment, including maintaining daily forklift inspection log and shipping, receiving, and pickup areas.
  • Assist in delivery and pickup of federal and state surplus property, including loading/unloading various types of trucks and trailers.

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Virginia Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment)
  • Forklift Certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment)
  • Experience with warehousing, inventory, or material handling.
  • Demonstrated, excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety, quality control, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and re-prioritize work as new tasks come in.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with all levels of staff.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with word processors and spreadsheets.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of government surplus programs and applicable regulations and policies (ex: GSA State Plan of Operation, Chapter 12 of the APSPSM, etc.)
  • Experience operating a variety of heavy equipment in a warehouse setting.
  • Experience with Assetworks or GovDeals.
  • Experience with product merchandising.
