Job Duties
The Science Museum of Virginia is seeking a dynamic Finance Manager with a sharp eye for detail and a true passion for numbers to join our Finance team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in stewarding the financial health of a mission-driven agency that inspires curiosity and innovation every day.
Reporting to the Finance Director, this role leads the accounting and reporting of the Science Museum’s funds, ensuring full compliance with state and federal guidelines. You’ll oversee daily fiscal operations in accordance with the Code of Virginia and directives from the State Treasurer, while ensuring all reporting aligns with Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP). Beyond compliance, you’ll be a key strategic partner by delivering accurate, insightful financial data that supports planning, decision-making, program evaluation, and resource allocation. You’ll also drive continuous improvement of financial systems and processes, helping the Science Museum operate efficiently and effectively as it serves communities across Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and state government fiscal policies, procedures, and accounting functions. Demonstrated ability to analyze financial data, prepare accurate reports and statements, manage multiple priorities, and evaluate processes to recommend improvements. The candidate should have strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create and maintain complex spreadsheets and management reports, along with a working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, enterprise accounting, and the state budget process. Experience interpreting and applying state rules, regulations, and policies, as well as processing revenues, expenditures, and journal entries across multiple funding structures in compliance with state requirements is essential.
The candidate must be capable of supervising daily accounting operations and supporting special projects, while communicating effectively with all levels of management and external state agencies. Experience in accounting, finance, business, or a related field is essential.
Additional Considerations
Experience with state systems such as Cardinal HCM, Cardinal Financials, FAACS, and LAS is a plus. A Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) or similar credential, advanced Excel skills and experience managing accounting functions within a state or comparable organization is a plus.
