The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking reliable, responsible, and enthusiastic students to intern with our agency!
The summer internship with the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice will provide students an opportunity to combine their academic studies with on-the-job training and experience while completing their education. The internship program is designed around a project-based assignment, which will support the mission of the agency and align career goals of the student. This opportunity is ideal for students pursuing careers in public administration, criminal justice, social services, or accounting/finance within government.
Internship Tracks & Responsibilities
1. Community Programs
- Assist in coordinating youth services and community-based initiatives
- Support program staff with outreach efforts and partnership engagement
- Help organize workshops, mentoring programs, or restorative justice activities
- Track participation data and assist with program reporting
2. Policy & Planning
- Conduct research on juvenile justice trends, legislation, and best practices
- Assist in drafting policy briefs, reports, and strategic documents
- Analyze program outcomes and support continuous improvement efforts
- Participate in planning meetings and interagency collaboration initiatives
3. Accounting & Finance
- Support budgeting and financial tracking for departmental programs
- Assist with invoice processing, expense reconciliation, and data entry
- Help review grant funding allocations and expenditures
- Learn about public-sector financial compliance and reporting standards
This summer internship will take place from late-May to mid-August.

Minimum Qualifications
- Rising junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an accredited university or college in good academic standing pursuing a major in public administration, criminal justice, social services, or accounting/finance within government.
- GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Knowledge of core functional areas related to related area within a division (Administration & Finance, Placement and Program Implementation, and Policy).
- Ability to work the entire duration of the internship program (late-May to Mid-August).
- Advanced Microsoft office skills and demonstrated proficiency with email programs such as Gmail or Outlook.
Additional Considerations
- Interest in juvenile justice reform or youth services.
- Experience with data analysis tools (Excel, etc.).
- Prior internship, volunteer, or campus leadership experience.
