Exciting news! - Central State Hospital (CSH) will transition to a brand new, state-of-the-art hospital and is slated to open in the spring/summer of 2027!
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including your choice of health plans, paid life insurance, retirement plans, 13 paid holidays, annual leave, family personal leave, sick leave, employee discount programs, and more!
CSH is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
The successful incumbent will have:
• Advanced knowledge and skills in mental health treatment, evidence-based clinical interventions, treatment planning, and in the administration of programs and services.
• Advanced analytic skills and program evaluation.
• Working knowledge of principles of continuous quality improvement and their application to clinical and facility practices.
• Knowledge of The Joint Commission, CMS, and other accrediting body standards.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
• Ability to provide collaborative leadership to groups and to manage program operations and personnel.
• Ability to make sound independent decisions as well as function smoothly in team settings.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to organize data for planning and reporting documents
• Knowledge and skills related to psychology, social work, and psychosocial rehabilitation, and the recovery model of mental health care.
• Knowledge of the roles and practice expectations of interdisciplinary treatment providers.
• Knowledge of Virginia’s system of involuntary psychiatric treatment, including temporary detention orders (TDOs), civil commitment, and the various types of forensic inpatient orders.
• Thorough knowledge and skills to develop treatment plans according to the standards of clinical practice.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in a mental health field of study such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Behavioral Therapy, or related field
• Progressive leadership experience
