The Virginia Department of Forensic Science has recently moved to a new, state-of-the-art facility in Hanover County. The facility houses staff from the Central Laboratory, Division of Technical Services, Director’s Office, Administrative Offices, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a highly skilled, motivated, and detail oriented Financial Specialist to join our Finance team. In this key role, you will take primary responsibility for completing all aspects of the annual Agency Risk Management and Internal Control Standards (ARMICS) requirements, as mandated by the Department of Accounts. You will ensure that all Finance processes are thoroughly and accurately documented, and you will make recommendations to strengthen internal controls and improve efficiency across financial operations.
Beyond ARMICS responsibilities, you will support a variety of core financial functions, including performing monthly financial reconciliations, processing accounts payable and employee reimbursements, assisting with fixed asset recording and control, and serving as periodic backup to other members of the Finance team.
We are looking for an individual who is proactive, analytical, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong attention to detail, sound judgement, and effective communication skills are essential for success in this role.
Minimum Qualifications
• Demonstrated work experience assessing and testing internal controls
• Experience documenting processes and making recommendations for improvement
• Knowledge and experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable principles and best practices
• Experience providing excellent customer service
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, to include Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook, and automated financial systems
• Ability to resolve issues and make independent logical decisions and recommendations in a complex operational environment
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting rigid deadlines
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with all levels of staff and management
Additional Considerations
• Experience working for the Commonwealth of Virginia in an accounting or auditing position
• Working knowledge of the Commonwealth Accounting Policies and Procedures (CAPP) Manual
• Experience performing ARMICS requirements for a state government agency or SOX requirements for a public company
• Proficiency with Cardinal Financials, the Commonwealth’s Accounting System
