Job Duties
The Retirement Payroll Support Technician completes all tasks required to facilitate processes payroll functions, including, but not limited to, receiving, reviewing, verifying, and processing direct deposit, and tax withholding requests from annuitants. Updating and keying data into an internal software system, and supporting the Benefits Disbursement team as needed, with other duties. The position will interact with other internal agency staff and external constituents as necessary, to resolve issues that arise during these processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
• Process direct deposit forms for retirees, ORP retirees, beneficiaries, ADROs, and survivors, ensuring that the form is verified for completeness, and that payment is deposited into the correct account.
• Issue correspondence as required if documentation or information is missing.
• Review and reply to benefit requests, conducting any research necessary, and collaborating with other units as required to ensure that payments can be correctly paid, deposited, or mailed to the correct destination.
• Process forms for retirees, ORP retirees, beneficiaries, ADROs, and survivors to ensure that federal and/or state tax withholding is withheld correctly from a payment; verify the form for completeness and process it in VNAV.
• Review and reply to tax requests, ensuring payments can be correctly paid, deposited, or mailed to the correct destination.
• Process returned benefit payments, reissuing payments to the correct payment destination for retirees, ORP retirees, ADROs, survivors, and/or beneficiaries.
• Update records as appropriate with updated or correct information.
• Reissue returned benefit payments noting that the payee is deceased, verifying all relevant information.
• Action potential problems that arise from various units, including, but not limited to, the Service Retirement Unit, Disability Retirement Unit, Health Insurance Unit, Beneficiary Payment Service, and Disbursement Unit, updating information, setting up overpayment deductions, submitting forms for approval, and performing research for records that have pending payment status.
• Provide verification of income for retirees, ORP retirees, ADROs, survivors, beneficiaries, and refund recipients.
• Respond to inquiries from internal and external constituents via phone, fax, and email, conducting any necessary research and analysis outside the scope of Disbursements in order to find a resolution.
• Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or course work in finance, accounting, business, or related field, preferred; an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Two years experience in payroll maintenance or processing of financial records
- General knowledge of bookkeeping methods and routine accounting principles and practices
- Thorough knowledge of standard office policies, procedures and practices.
- Experience with number systems, simple formulas, practical application of basic math and percentages, and accuracy in performing mathematical calculations
- Proficient computer skills in MS Office, particularly Excel, Outlook, large databases and other finance-related technologies

Experience working within VNAV, payroll software systems, or other similar financial software systems, preferred

This is an wage position, therefore no benefits are provided. The selected candidate will work 29 hours per week, on average over a 12-month period. Not to exceed 40 hours per week, or 1500 hours per 12-month period.

Currently, this position has a hybrid work schedule, working in the office three days on-site (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), and working remotely two days (Monday and Friday). The selected candidate must be able to work in the office any day of the week as required by the manager.
