The Employee Relations Coordinator Sr. Team Lead advances the mission of the Virginia Department of Corrections by providing expert leadership, coordination, and oversight in the administration of employee relations and disciplinary processes statewide. The position ensures that disciplinary actions are factually supported, procedurally compliant, and applied consistently across facilities by guiding ER Specialists, reviewing complex or high risk cases, and advising leadership on defensibility and due process considerations.
The Team Lead strengthens organizational effectiveness by mentoring ER Specialists, delivering advanced training, and promoting consistent interpretation of the Standards of Conduct. This position manages high profile matters, supports grievance and arbitration strategy, and serves as a subject matter expert in cases with significant operational impact. By monitoring trends, identifying systemic issues, and recommending process improvements, the Team Lead plays a vital role in building a professional, accountable, and fair workplace culture that supports VADOC’s mission of safety, integrity, and transformational change.

Knowledge:
• Advanced knowledge of employee relations principles, workplace investigations, disciplinary processes, and grievance systems.
• Thorough understanding of the Virginia Standards of Conduct, employment law fundamentals, and due process requirements.
• Knowledge of leadership practices needed to guide work teams, mentor staff, and ensure quality control across ER casework.
• Familiarity with statewide HR systems, data tracking, trend analysis, and reporting practices.
Skills:
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex, high risk cases and ensure consistency across regions.
• Advanced writing skills for drafting high quality recommendation summaries, advisories, and hearing preparation documents.
• Skilled at presenting training, facilitating discussions, and coaching staff and leadership on ER concepts.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence decision making and provide credible, sound guidance.
• Skill in organizing work, prioritizing competing deadlines, and coordinating team efforts effectively.
Abilities:
• Ability to mentor, coach, and guide ER Specialists to ensure accuracy, consistency, and defensibility in their work.
• Ability to lead complex case reviews, manage sensitive or high profile matters, and support agency wide consistency.
• Ability to interpret and apply policies with sound judgment and impartiality across diverse operational environments.
• Ability to compile and present discipline trend data, identify systemic issues, and recommend process improvements.
• Ability to build strong working relationships and collaborate effectively with HR leadership, facility administrators, and central office staff.
