Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Grants Specialist within the Division of Marketing and Development. This position will provide grant administration and program support to the Division of Marketing and Development and its Office of Agriculture and Forestry Development, including the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program and other state and Federal programs promoting Virginia's agriculture and forest products sector. The Grants Specialist will ensure timely and successful implementation of project activities and compliance with all program regulations, ensures that grantees utilize funding sources in accordance with program requirements, coordinate local project monitoring and reporting for assigned programs, and maintain coordination and collaboration with other offices and programs both within and outside of the Agency to carry out these functions. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Significant knowledge of the principles of grant management. Ability to research, understand, apply, and write about grant program code policies and guidelines for the implementation of State and Federally funded programs. Experience preparing accurate financial records and reporting requirements. Experience managing all administrative aspects of a comprehensive grant program to include handling grant reimbursements and needed documentation. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with organizations and individuals associated with planning and implementing projects designed to carry out the mission of funding source(s), to work comfortably with diverse constituencies, discern their needs, and develop an appropriate level of assistance; to manage time strategically and handle multiple projects and priorities, and to develop expertise in required subject areas. Excellent customer service and oral and written communication skills to include public speaking in addition to computer proficiency.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities to include accounting/auditing, business administration, or a related discipline to include knowledge of food-based or agriculture-based assistance programs, incentives, and organizations. Experience managing aspects of a government grant program including handling grant reimbursements, budgeting and reporting. Experience working with local, state or federal governments on grant programs or a food-related grant program.
