The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) is seeking a highly motivated, hardworking, dependable, organized, skilled and experienced individual to serve as a Dental Assistant for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) in a community based Mobile Dental Program. This position works alongside an interdisciplinary team to assist the dental staff to organize and conduct clinics and treatment within the scope of practice of a dental assistant in a variety of community settings throughout the Commonwealth, as well as assists with production of radiographs, including review of films and determination if radiographs need to be repeated, and performing sterilization of equipment. This position also works with the team to provide advocacy in the areas of oral health and preventive healthcare. Advocacy work of the team includes teaching oral health education, training programs and general presentations regarding the mobile dental program; and providing consultation services, as needed, per the direction of the Dental Team Manager and the Director for the Office of Integrated Health Support Network. This position is responsible for management of clinic schedules, scheduling patient appointments, answering patient and caregiver inquiries regarding the appointment process, organization of patient charts within the dental practice software, stocking and inventory of equipment; and responding to questions and concerns, completing appropriate documentation in clinical records, and maintaining documentation for tracking and data collection. This position has the opportunity to perform standardized or specialized procedures, within the scope of practice of a dental assistant, while obtaining guidance regarding more complex issues of dental care, treatment, and practice and/or program management, as training is provided as needed to ensure opportunity for growth. This is a field position and requires highway driving and routine overnight travel. A valid, unrestricted driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Commonwealth’s Driver Safety Program are required.
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience performing administrative duties including, but not limited to, all clerical and data entry needs of a dental program.
• Knowledge and skills to utilize basic computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office.
• Experience utilizing dental office electronic software, such as EagleSoft.
• Ability to prioritize workload and priorities scheduling patient appointments.
• Ability to be flexible and function independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent planning/analytical decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively with adults with special needs in a calm and professional manner.
• Ability to work within scope of practice and the allowable activities of a Dental Assistant without on-site supervision.
• Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
• CPR-BLS certification or ability to obtain.
• X-ray certification or ability to obtain.
Additional Considerations
• Experience utilizing dental practice software.
• Knowledge of Developmental Disabilities and leadership principles and practices.
• Experience in dental assisting and/or dental office management.
• ACLS Certification or the ability to obtain certification.
• Dental Assistant certification credential from the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. or is willing to obtain.
• Experience driving large vehicles such as a Winnebago or a willingness to learn about driving large mobile dental units, as needed.
