Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s Police Department is responsible for the safety and security of all members of the University community. NSU invites applicants to the position of Police Officer. The incumbent is responsible for enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, the rules and regulations of the University, and providing a safe and secure environment for all members of the community. To complete agency training programs and certifications to fully sworn officers advancing to perform senior law enforcement activities. Conduct independent patrol, inspections, arrests, evidence compilation, preservation, reports, testifying in judicial proceedings, education presentations and training. Responsible for investigation as well as training, coordination and assigning work within their field of assignment or expertise.
Norfolk State University Police Department is seeking certified officer transfers for applicants who possess or have possessed a Virginia law enforcement certification within the past three years. In addition, new officers who have not been through the process are eligible to apply.
$4,500 signing/retention bonus for serving three years of continuous service upon employment.
Candidates can expect routine duties and responsibilities to include:
1. Conduct security patrols of campus buildings, grounds and assigned sectors/perimeters.
2. Enforce University rules and regulations and the ordinances of the Commonwealth.
3. Investigate matters of complaints, accidents, and alleged crimes and complete reports as required.
4. Respond to emergency situations to include administering first aid.
5. Patrol assigned sectors on foot, bicycle, and vehicle in efforts to detect and prevent crimes

Minimum Qualifications
1. Must be at least 21 years of age on date of hire.
2. Possess a valid driver’s license.
3. Demonstrated skill in interpreting complex policies, procedures and ordinances.
4. Demonstrated skill in preparing reports.
5. Demonstrated ability to interact with and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with
general public.
6. Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
7. Ability to carry firearm (no felony or domestic assault convictions).
8. Ability to pass a physical fitness test.
Additional Considerations
1. Associate's degree in criminal justice, or college credits earned via an accredited higher educational
institution in Criminal Justice.
2. Considerable experience working on a college or university campus.
3. Considerable knowledge of law enforcement work activities and concepts.
4. Department Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) law enforcement certified.
Special Instructions
LIST OF AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS:
Criminal History
1. Conviction of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude (crimes contrary to justice, honesty, or good morals).
2. Conviction of any Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanor, including traffic violations, or the Virginia State Law equivalent within the last five (5) years.
3. Any conviction of domestic violence.
4. Any individual falling into any of the aforementioned criminal history categories, prior to conviction, that enters a plea agreement or other form of sentencing disposition to the reduction of charges will be disqualified from the entry process. 5. Commission of undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature.
Traffic Violations
1. Five (5) or more negative points on a Virginia Operator’s License or the equivalent for out of state licenses, and/or two (2) moving violations in any state within the last twelve (12) months.
2. Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accident within the last five (5) years
Drugs
1. Any involvement in the sale or distribution of illegal drugs.
2. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last five (5) years.
3. Illegal possession and use of heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens or any other schedule one (1) or two (2) drug, or any derivative thereof, as defined in the Code of Virginia within the last ten (10) years.
