Job Duties
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an English Language Learner (ELL) to serve as a member of the instructional team with specific duties to provide classroom instruction for students with blindness, visual impairments and other disabilities.
The English Language Learner is to provide quality educational services to preschool and K-12 students of the Commonwealth with deafness, blindness and sensory-impaired multiple disabilities.
The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is located in the historic, vibrant city of Staunton, Virginia. VSDB provides superior education for students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/vision impaired, deafblind, and deaf or blind with other disabilities.
VSDB offers PreK-12 education with both residential and day student options.

This is a 10-month, faculty position with state benefits, including health insurance, retirement, life insurance, and disability coverage.
The beginning date for this position is the beginning of our next school year in July 2026.
Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university. A master's degree is preferred.
Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in English as a Second Language (ESL) PreK-12.
Current CPR and First Aid Certification required or must be obtained per school policies.
Hold a valid Virginia Driver’s license and submit for review by the DMV.
Knowledge of child growth and development, including the unique educational and developmental needs of children with disabilities.
Knowledge of English Learner (EL) instructional principles, practices, procedures, and assessment systems, including WIDA and ACCESS.
Knowledge of special education processes and Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and implementation.
Knowledge of instructional technology and assistive technology used to enhance communication, accessibility, and learning.
Ability to design, implement, and differentiate instruction for students ages 2–22 with diverse learning needs, including students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, blind, visually impaired, and English Learners.
Ability to assess, document, and monitor student progress using a variety of assessment measures and data-driven practices to inform instructional decision-making.
Ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student achievement and ensure implementation of best practices.
Ability to establish and maintain positive learning environments and appropriate standards of student behavior.
Ability to communicate effectively through written English, including the preparation and presentation of reports and other professional documentation.
Ability to plan and deliver professional development and training related to instructional practices and student support services.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
Ability to participate in school-related activities, meetings, and events occurring during or outside regular school hours as required.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced level as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI), or the ability to attain the required proficiency level within three years of employment.
Ability to consistently follow school division policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Prefer experience in teaching in a classroom setting with special needs students who have sensory impairments
