Job Duties

To provide quality educational programs to enable incarcerated youth and adults to become responsible, productive, tax-paying members of their community.

To provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area; to assist assigned students to complete the required competencies for that trade area; demonstrate effective classroom or lab management; ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspect of safety management; and to maintain accurate and current
students record for the assigned student.

This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent. Must hold a current Class A Commercial Driver's License for the Commonwealth of Virginia, have a Minimum of 3 years’ full-time CDL driving experience, and have a clean driving record through the Department of Motor Vehicles. The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching and supervise students and inmate aides in a classroom/Lab environment. The ability to maintain accurate
records; the ability to facilitate other Correctional Education instructors. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working
knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrate competency in the relevant field of current
trade licensure.

Additional Considerations

Knowledge of all phases of the trade area; ability to work with adult in-mates in a classroom/lab environment. Knowledge and experience in correctional education
classroom management. The ability to supervise inmates and aides in the correctional facility; the ability to facilitate other instructors and knowledge of the DOC institutional policies and procedures.
