Job Duties

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated cook to join our team and support the nutritional needs of residents in our Veterans Care Center. This role plays an essential part in preparing high‑quality meals that meet dietary guidelines, promote resident satisfaction, and uphold all safety and sanitation standards.

Schedule: Rotating 6:00am-2:30pm and 11:30am-8:00pm
5 days a week and every other weekend. (including holidays)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Prepare and cook meals according to planned menus, recipes, and dietary requirements, including special and modified diets.
• Ensure all food is prepared safely, attractively, and in compliance with state and federal regulations and facility policies.
• Maintain proper food temperatures during preparation and service.
• Assist in menu preparation by providing input on food items and resident preferences.
• Set up meal trays, serving lines, and equipment needed for each meal service.
• Monitor and rotate food inventory, ensuring proper storage and minimizing waste.
• Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, work areas, and food storage spaces.
• Follow all infection control and food safety standards.
• Work collaboratively with Dietary Aides and other team members to ensure efficient meal service.
• Communicate resident food preferences, concerns, or changes in dietary needs to the Dietary Manager or supervisor.
• Support a positive dining experience by ensuring meals are appetizing, timely, and consistent.

Minimum Qualifications

•Must be Serv Safe certified within one year of employment. Hampton Roads Fats, Oil, and Grease Training aka HR F.O.G. Certification Required
•Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines (SERV Safe standards)
•Knowledge of food safety, sanitation practices, and special diet requirements.
• Ability to follow standardized recipes, menus, and portion control guidelines
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation practices
• Ability to stand, walk, and lift items in a fast‑paced environment.
• Prior experience in food service or healthcare dietary settings preferred but not required.

Additional Considerations

Previous long-term care, geriatric or hospital experience preferred but not required.
