Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts. Three Rivers Health District serves the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula region which includes the counties of: Richmond, Westmoreland, Northumberland, Lancaster, Essex, Middlesex, Mathews, Gloucester, King & Queen and King William.

The position of Health Educator Senior provides or supervises all health education services in a district for a segment of a statewide program by planning, implementing, and evaluating health education activities. May include the supervision of staff. Characteristic activities: establish goals and objectives for assigned programs; prepares and submits grant applications; delivers educational programs to clients; conducts health education training; revises and develops educational materials; collects program-specific data and writes reports; conducts needs assessments; provides technical assistance to local and community agencies/organizations regarding program planning.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of public health issues; public and private health care practices; program evaluation; planning and policy development; community organizing; survey methods and use of data and health education principles
• Skills in program planning; implementations and evaluation; community assessment and organization; writing reports and program plans; grant writing; public speaking; group dynamics and consultation with other professionals and the general public
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, problem solve, make appropriate decisions and develop program goals and objectives, evaluate program outcomes, impacts and processes
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; utilize excellent interpersonal skills and foster good working relationships with professionals and community groups to achieve desired outcomes
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with information and security policies

Additional Considerations

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) for Health Educators

Experience working in public health, social work, human services or health-related field preferred
