Agency Overview:

The Science Museum of Virginia is the Commonwealth’s flagship informal learning institution. The agency’s main campus is located in Richmond. One satellite location, the Danville Science Center, operates in Danville, and another, the Northern Virginia Science Center, is currently under construction in Loudoun County with an anticipated open date of spring 2027.

From experiential exhibitions to in-depth live demos to fun videos on social media, the Science Museum of Virginia looks for opportunities to encourage all Virginians to enrich their lives through science. The Science Museum is a catalyst for inspiration, a place that sparks curiosity, encourages discovery and generates ideas in science, technology, engineering and math.

Job Description:

The Science Museum of Virginia is seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused Membership Coordinator to help grow its agency-wide membership program and turn visits into lasting relationships. Membership is where visitation becomes a deeper connection, helping the communities we serve carry the wonder and possibility of science far beyond our doors.

In this role, you will serve as the primary membership administrator for the agency’s online ticketing platform, supporting customer needs while building, maintaining and optimizing the membership backend. You will improve data quality; develop useful reports; support sales strategy; and identify member behavior, engagement and retention trends that guide membership growth.

Working within the Communications team, you will help manage the member journey through email marketing, direct mail, renewal campaigns, targeted outreach and other segmented communications. You will serve as the primary contact for the membership inbox and phone line, answer account questions, maintain records, support renewal mailings, track marketing-related costs, help administer special programs, and coordinate with staff and volunteers to move membership initiatives forward.

You will also serve as the main membership contact for Guest Operations and Call Center staff, providing accurate sales guidance, tracking eligible sales and incentives and supporting recognition efforts that motivate teams to promote membership.
If you love turning customer questions into great experiences, data into clear insights and creative marketing into measurable results, we’d love to hear from you.

This position primarily follows a Monday-Friday schedule but may require occasional evening or weekend events.
Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.virginia.gov/. All applications should include a cover letter, a detailed resume with the names and contact information of three professional references, and a link to a portfolio of relevant work.

Benefits

The position offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, FSA, HRA, HSA, life insurance, 457 and pension plan, short and long-term disability and employee assistance program. The Science Museum has a generous paid time off policy, including vacation leave, four days family & personal leave, eight sick days per year and 13 paid holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience in customer service, membership program operations, copywriting and destination marketing, with demonstrated success in lifecycle marketing, email marketing, direct mail and results-driven outreach. They should be able to provide timely, professional support to members and internal staff while maintaining strong attention to detail, meeting deadlines and handling sensitive membership data responsibly.

The candidate should be highly organized and comfortable building internal tracking systems, maintaining accurate records, developing special reports and using data to support member engagement, renewals and retention. Familiarity with analytics dashboards and ticketing systems is preferred. They should be flexible, patient, resourceful and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software is required.

Additional Considerations

Should have demonstrated experience writing member communications and marketing emails. Experience with database platforms such as Raiser’s Edge and Anchor, and email automation platforms such as Mailchimp and HTML/CSS is a plus.
