Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Senior Database Administrator to manage the physical databases used by VDOE and manage the DBM’s vendor.

This position allows for remote eligibility on a case by case bias, dependent upon your location. Anyone located less than 60 miles outside of the Richmond, VA area would be required to work a hybrid schedule.

They will work with VITA to provide a reliable and stable environment for both the applications and databases, provide database administration of DOE databases, ensure proper security and backup of the data, assist with new database requirements, maintain the currency of the database technology, and perform all activities necessary to provide proactive maintenance to avoid unplanned service interruption.

The Senior Database Administrator would be expected to perform the following duties:
Ensure all contacts with Oracle, VITA, and other vendors are maintained.

  • Maintenance contracts, licenses, and agreements are reviewed and renewed on time to ensure no interruption of service occurs.
  • Conduct all VDOE database administration and security vulnerability remediation, as well as, Oracle database administration.
  • Perform upgrades and security patching as needed.
  • Develop and successfully test database structures that meet specifications defined in support of system development or other identified requirements to meet agency needs.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure and database measurements to insure continuing availability of agency data and optimization of the database structure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working in Oracle database design, optimization, configuration and maintenance, including experience working with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), Oracle Financial Database, and Weblogic.
  • Demonstrated experience working with ASM.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Azure Cloud Server.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a systems development team environment and to support complex data processing requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple critical deadline projects with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability providing responses and documentation for security audits.
  • Experience participating in or leading annual disaster recovery exercises.

Additional Considerations

  • Bachelors Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field or demonstrated progressively responsible experience in developing and maintaining information systems preferred.
  • Prior experience in vendor management preferred.
  • Oracle certification preferred.
