Job Duties

The DGS Division of Capitol Square Services (DCSS) is a customer-focused organization whose primary function is to provide a quality environment for the approximately 75 state agencies that occupy the facilities overseen by DGS. DCSS provides its customers effective and timely operational, maintenance, and repair services, as well as manages capital outlay projects and provides professional services contracts for statewide public body use.

DCSS is responsible for over 40 buildings and 20 parking facilities and operates and maintains about 6.45 million square feet of buildings and grounds at the seat of government to include the Governor's Mansion, the Virginia Capitol and Capitol Square.

The Carpenter performs skilled building maintenance, repair, and installation work to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of facility systems. This role supports preventive maintenance programs, responds to service requests, and assists other building team members in maintaining high standards of customer service, equipment performance, and operational continuity.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Virginia Driver's License

Experience performing carpentry work, including installation, repair, and maintenance of building components.

Knowledge of carpentry systems, building components, and mechanical equipment.

Ability to perform preventive maintenance on building systems and mechanical equipment.

Skill in troubleshooting and repairing carpentry‑related issues to minimize occupant downtime.

Ability to respond to service requests promptly and professionally.

Experience maintaining accurate written logs, daily time records, and weekly timesheets.

Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks within required timeframes.

Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, bending, climbing ladders, and working in various environments.

Ability to perform repair and maintenance tasks involving multiple trades when assigned.

Additional Considerations

Experience working in a commercial, institutional, or government facilities environment.

Experience supporting building maintenance teams and providing technical assistance on carpentry systems.
