Job Duties

Join our team at VEC as a Claims Examiner in the Benefit Payment Charge unit, and play a critical role in delivering accurate, timely, and professional processing of unemployment and special program claims.
This position ensures benefit payments and employer charges are correct by examining claims, reconciling complex reports, resolving eligibility issues, and coordinating with claimants, employers, financial institutions, and internal partners. Through detailed investigation, careful documentation, and strong customer service, the examiner helps safeguard program integrity, supports Virginians seeking benefits, and ensures employer accounts reflect accurate charges and reimbursements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of claims processing; basic accounting and cash management principles; and office operations.
• Strong customer service, claims examination and processing, data entry, and communication (oral and written) skills.
• Experience performing detailed work related to the tracking and resolution of claims and employer charges; collecting and analyzing information to make determinations; preparing and reconciling reports; recording and entering information into a database; interpreting and applying program requirements; working independently and as a member of a team; responding to inquiries and providing technical assistance; and prioritizing work load and meeting deadlines.
• Experience in business, insurance, risk management, accounting, or similar field.
• Proficient in Microsoft software (e.g., Excel and Word), OneDrive, and similar software programs.

Additional Considerations

• Working knowledge of the UI benefits eligibility and claims process.
• Experience working with VEC programs and processing claims and charges; entering and reviewing data in a mainframe and PC based system environment (such as VUIS or related systems); reviewing claims; and working with UI benefit and/or Trade programs.
