Job Duties
The Warden contributes to the public safety mission by directing and managing all administrative and operational functions of an adult correctional facility, including security, custody, treatment services, and inmate programs. This role oversees the planning, organization, and execution of institutional operations in accordance with established policies, procedures, mandates, and legal requirements.
The Warden establishes strategic objectives, formulates and interprets policy consistent with Division standards, and evaluates institutional programs to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability. Responsibilities include providing leadership and oversight for security operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining a safe and orderly environment for staff, inmates, and visitors.
Guided by the principles of Public Safety, Professional Conduct, Accountability, and a People First philosophy, the Warden models integrity, ethical leadership, and sound judgment. The role fosters a culture of safety, respect, and professionalism while promoting rehabilitative opportunities and supporting staff development and organizational excellence.
Minimum Qualifications
Extensive working knowledge of the criminal justice system, treatment programs for inmates, facility security, and administration/operations support functions. Working knowledge of institutional operations, security, inmate programs and classification. Considerable knowledge of modern corrections methods, policies and practices. Demonstrated human relations skills and excellent communication skills (oral/written), adept to directing and motivating a diverse work force. Extensive working knowledge of departmental policies, institutional policies, operating practices, procedures, and inmate programs.
Ability to complete the Virginia Ethics Council Conflict of Interest (COI) filing within two (2) business days of hire and annually thereafter, in accordance with the Code of Virginia § 2.2-3100.
Ability to complete COI training within two (2) months of hire and every other year thereafter, as required by Code of Virginia § 2.2-3132.
Additional Considerations
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs. Basic Leadership for the Corrections Professional (LEAD) Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training. Considerable working experience with Evidence Based Practices.
