The Department of General Services (DGS) is a diverse, customer-focused agency dedicated to supporting state agencies, local governments, and the citizens of the Commonwealth. We deliver a wide range of essential services that keep Virginia’s operations running smoothly and efficiently. Our agency provides leadership and oversight in areas including laboratory testing, statewide procurement and contracting, building construction and engineering, facilities management, real estate services, fleet management, mail distribution, and surplus and warehouse operations.
We are seeking a motivated Human Resources Coordinator with a strong customer service and administrative background to join our team. In this role, you will gain experience across the full spectrum of human resource functions including recruitment support, onboarding, employment & transactions, and benefits & payroll support.
Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide administrative support for HR operations, including records management, customer service, and maintaining organized files and spreadsheets.
- Support recruitment activities by preparing materials, documenting interviews, conducting references, coordinating wage hiring, and assisting at job fairs.
- Support onboarding processes by handling background checks, I‑9 and e‑Verify compliance, and new employee orientation.
- Assist with payroll and benefits by entering HR system transactions, processing payroll documents, and helping with workers’ compensation.
- Coordinate the learning management system (LMS) functions including assign and track required training, and support employee recognition activities.
This position will be located in Richmond, Virginia and must report on-site.

Minimum Qualifications
- Experience providing administrative and customer service support
- Experience maintaining records and files
- Experience using automated systems & extracting information from databases, including data reporting
- Knowledge of office administration, filing systems, data management, spreadsheet tracking, and document preparation.
- Proficient skill in use of MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook and Teams
- Skill in the use of office equipment and monitoring upkeep/performance
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated professionalism
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills for interacting with a diverse group of employees, managers, directors, and applicants
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail
- Excellent data entry skills and technical skills with the ability to compose, compile, and format reports
- Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive HR information with discretion
- Ability to solve routine problems, identify discrepancies, and escalate complex issues appropriately
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work both independently and in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to manage, prioritize, and complete multiple assignments accurately within established time frames
