Job Duties

Under the supervision of the Asst/Associate AD for External Engagement and Innovation, serve as primary media contact for assigned VMI teams.
• Prepare press releases, game previews and game recaps
• Input statistics for assigned home events
• Assist in the publicity of all VMI varsity sports, including assistance with digital media and the VMI Ticket Office
• Foster relationships with members of the media. Oversee media credentialing process for assigned home events.
• Assist in the creation of social media content, including graphics, photos, and videos
• Utilize Adobe Creative Suite products, specifically InDesign and Photoshop
• Coordinate and publish written and photographic content for the University’s official athletics website and official social media platforms
• Assist in the planning of media events, such as news conferences, photo shoots and interviews for assigned sports

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field preferred.


Relevant undergraduate experience in the field of professional or collegiate athletic
communications required.

Proficiency in Desktop Publishing, NCAA Live Stats scoring software and social media management preferred but not required. Must have an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.

Additional Considerations

This position will facilitate publicity for VMI Athletics, 15 varsity athletics teams and 300-plus student-athletes. Generate VMI Athletics news and expand the VMI brand by utilizing internal resources and traditional and “new” media outlets.
• Pitch news stories about teams to local and national media, and arrange interviews for coaches and cadet-athletes.
• Staff all home events, and occasionally travel to road events when possible to ensure best coverage.
• Assist the VMI Athletics Multimedia Coordinator with various creative video projects and/or broadcasts
• Maintain official athletics website VMIKeydets.com and related digital platforms.
• Create online and print publications, in addition to maintaining biographical and historical information and stat keeping.
