Job Duties

The Local Records Archivist will lead the identification, preservation, and accessibility of Virginia’s local government records, particularly chancery and various other court records from the Circuit Courts. This position arranges and describes complex historical documents, develops and maintains electronic finding aids and descriptive records, and promotes public access through outreach and education. The role supports stewardship, research, and collaboration with government offices to preserve Virginia’s legal and civic history.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of state and local history and legal processes.

• Considerable knowledge of standard archival conservation guidelines.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on database management and the ability to learn new applications quickly.

• Demonstrated ability to analyze, arrange, and describe collections accurately.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively search for, evaluate, and use information.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

• Demonstrated commitment to archival outreach, professional development, and public engagement.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations both internally and externally.

Extensive knowledge of U.S. History, Library and Information Science or related field.

Additional Considerations

Considerable knowledge of Virginia state and local history and legal processes highly desirable.

Considerable experience with archival description standards such as MARC, EAD, and DACS is highly desirable.

Experience supporting access to historical records in a public service, legal, or government records setting is preferred.
