Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for Assistant Superintendent for Educator Workforce to provide strategic leadership for Virginia's educator preparation, licensure, and workforce systems to ensure that every student has access to well-prepared, effective educators.
The Assistant Superintendent for Educator Workforce serves as a senior advisor on educator preparation and licensure policy and is expected to translate research, data, legislation, and regulation into coherent statewide strategy.
The Assistant Superintendent for Educator Workforce will be expected to perform the following duties:
- Create an environment that empowers and enables the staff to provide essential services and promote student achievement throughout the Commonwealth by providing a vision, clear direction, and daily guidance for the review and issuing of licenses for school personnel and continued development of approved programs for the preparation of teachers in a timely manner.
- Provide leadership and input for the development and/or revision of policies, regulations, guidelines, etc., pertinent to the focus areas and functions of the Department of Education, particularly those areas of responsibility within the office.
- Work collaboratively with the superintendent, deputy superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors, and associate directors to fulfill the Department of Education’s purpose and function.
- Represent the Department as needed, presenting a professional, positive, and competent image of the Department.
- Ensure expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of educator preparation, licensure, and traditional and alternative pathways into the profession.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies governing educator preparation and licensure.
- Knowledge of educator workforce trends, including recruitment, preparation, retention, and shortage areas.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute statewide strategy and lead complex systems change and modernization.
- Skill in using data, research, and program evaluation to inform policy, assess program quality, and drive continuous improvement.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex information and build partnerships with school divisions, preparation providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead large, multifaceted teams and manage budgets, programs, and projects of significant statewide scope.
Additional Considerations
- A college degree in education administration, public administration, or organizational management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
- Experience with teacher education programs and experience in administration or supervision is preferred.
- Experience in budget allocation and management and evaluation of staff.
