Job Duties
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced civil litigation attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Trial Section’s General Civil Unit. Defending the Commonwealth of Virginia, its agencies and departments, and its officials and employees in state and federal courts, litigating cases ranging from personal injury torts to alleged violations of constitutional rights. The representation includes legal research, preparing pleadings, drafting briefs and legal memoranda, conducting all aspects of discovery including e-discovery, motions practice, providing legal advice to clients, court appearances, and trial and appellate work – in addition to providing or receiving mentorship while working closely with other attorneys in the Unit. Excellent opportunity to practice in a variety of areas without repetitive daily tasks and obtain in-court experience. Work-life balance is emphasized and encouraged. Minimum Qualifications
• Admission to the Virginia State Bar required.
• The position requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to manage a challenging caseload, and a willingness to assist and supervise others.
• Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
• Ability to work independently, but also closely with a team of dedicated attorneys and staff in a collegial environment.
Additional Considerations
A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of civil litigation experience in federal or state court is preferred; similar litigation experience will be considered.
Through this posting, we are seeking applicants at both junior and senior levels, with junior levels having a minimum of at least three years of practice. Salary is determined based on years of experience as a practicing attorney – starting around $91,000 for those having three years’ experience and ranging from approximately $125,000 to $145,000 for those with 15-20+ years of experience.
