Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Part Time School Health Special Projects Manager to provide leadership, consultation, and technical assistance to strengthen the capacity of school personnel, school nurses, healthcare providers, families, and community partners to effectively address the health needs of students.

The School Health Special Projects Manager would be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement training and technical assistance to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of school nursing and school health services, especially as it relates to diabetes management within the school setting.
  • Deliver training through a variety of inclusive formats and platforms, including conferences, summits, livestreams, webinars, and online cohort-based sessions.
  • Support the planning and implementation of the annual statewide health care conference for school nurses and other school-based health care professionals.
  • Prepare summaries of legislative actions related to diabetes management within the school setting and school health.
  • Collaborate with state agencies such as the Virginia Department of Health, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, as well as other relevant entities, to maximize coordinated outreach to targeted student populations and provide unified guidance and support to local school divisions and their communities.
  • Collaborate with OBHSS staff to promote the provision of comprehensive and integrated services that support the healthy social, emotional, behavioral and physical growth of students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an advanced degree in nursing or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed registered nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the full scope of school nurses’ roles, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to support school divisions, including leadership and division‑wide support.
  • Strong understanding of public education systems and federal and state health care regulations, structures, and requirements, including IDEA principles and regulations.
  • Understanding of comprehensive and cohesive support systems that provide social, emotional, familial, and physical supports to ensure all students have equitable opportunities for success.
  • Proficiency with a variety of software and productivity tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Internet Explorer/Chrome.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and manage initiatives that support planned change within schools and school divisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to use school and division data to guide decision‑making related to student health, attendance, discipline, and school safety.

Additional Considerations

  • A master’s degree in nursing or public health is preferred.
  • Health Education Specialist (CHES), National School Nurse Certification, and/or Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a school level or division level health or nursing administrator is preferred.
