Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for a Registered Nurse to provide quality nursing care to residents within Bon Air Juvenile Justice Center. Assesses and treats acute and chronic illness through the use of nursing assessment, nursing protocols and standing orders. Responds to medical emergencies. Guides the LPN in their nursing practice. Maintains a standard of nursing practice consistent with state and federal laws, Va. Board of Nursing laws, regulation, and guidance documents and DJJ policies and procedures based on the community standard.

  • Medication Administration
  • Responds to Medical Emergencies and Security Events
  • Medical Service Request, Reviews Nursing Protocol Forms, Collects Sick Call Statistics, Assist with Chart Audits and other duties as assigned
  • Utilizes nursing assessment, history of present illness, review of symptoms and nursing protocols to make a nursing diagnosis.
  • Utilizes nursing diagnosis to determine level of care needed, implements standing orders based on the level of care required and follows through with emergency procedure as indicated by nursing diagnosis and standing orders.
  • Makes referrals to the nursing supervisor, NP/MD or ER as appropriate using critical thinking and standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Accredited nursing program graduate with current RN licensure (VA or compact)
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification (two‑person, BVM, AED)
  • Basic proficiency with electronic health records.
  • Experience in medication administration and application of the 5 rights.
  • Working knowledge of professional nursing principles.
  • Understanding of normal adolescent growth, development, and common health issues.
  • Ability to perform nursing assessments and apply protocols to determine care needs.
  • Ability to implement standing orders and follow emergency procedures as indicated.

Additional Considerations

  • Experienced as an RN in clinical practice in corrections, ambulatory care, pediatrics or adolescents or prior LPN experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with ACA or NCCHC accreditation.
