Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277-bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of Summer 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

Join a passionate team at Central State Hospital as a Clinical Treatment Team Social Worker, where your expertise will help drive meaningful recovery for individuals in need of compassionate, trauma‑informed care. In this dynamic role, you’ll provide clinical assessments, therapy, treatment planning, and coordinated discharge support while collaborating closely with families, CSBs, and community partners. If you’re energized by person‑centered work and making a real difference every day, this is your opportunity to shine and grow with a mission-driven organization!

The successful candidate will have a strong foundation in social work principles, theories, practices, and techniques, ideally with experience serving forensic and/or civilly committed individuals with mental illness. They will bring demonstrated skill in case management, resource coordination, and advanced clinical assessment, along with the ability to provide individual, group, and family counseling using supportive, educational, and insight-oriented approaches. This role requires excellent interviewing skills and the ability to gather meaningful information from patients and families. The ideal candidate will excel at developing and implementing person-centered treatment plans both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is a thorough understanding of the NASW Code of Ethics. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment with frequent change, collaborate effectively with other professionals, and contribute positively to a team-driven culture.
