Statement of the Position:
The Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education within the School of Education at Norfolk State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Elementary Education (F0236) position, with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2025. We seek candidates that have expertise in curriculum development and instruction for pre-kindergarten through grade 6 learners, inclusive classroom environments, and research-based best practices in elementary education.

Overview of the Department:
Norfolk State University’s Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, and Special Education (EESE) is housed in the School of Education (EESE). The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs focused upon working with children in P-12 school settings as well as community and agency programs.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach and develop courses in the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) and Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T) degree programs in Elementary Education. The candidate will supervise student internships and other field experiences, advise and mentor students, hold office hours as designated by the University, engage in program development, curriculum reviews, and assessment of student learning, provide support for program coordination and administration (e.g., recruitment, admissions, programming), and serve on Departmental, School, and University committees. The candidate will conduct scholarly research, publish in respected refereed scholarly journals and/or academic presses, and participate in other scholarly activities to secure external funding.

Minimum Qualifications

The review committee will seek evidence of required qualifications in the candidate’s cover letter and CV. The successful candidate must have:

• An earned doctorate/terminal degree (Ph.D./Ed.D.) in Elementary Education or related field from an accredited (U.S.) or certified (international) university.
• Demonstrated evidence of inclusive teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level that builds engaging, relevant, and authentic learning experiences for students.
• Active involvement in professional associations and/or in partnerships in the field.
• Demonstrated evidence of established or developing research agenda that informs teaching and practice in the Elementary Education field.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, organization, and negotiation skills.

The review committee will seek evidence of required qualifications in the candidate’s cover letter and CV. Preference will be given to those who have one or more of the following:

• Prior college, university, or professional association experience.
• State licensure or certification in teaching elementary education (candidates who are licensed in other states can submit to the Virginia Department of Education’s licensure department to obtain a postgraduate professional license for the Commonwealth of Virginia).
• A strong diversity and social justice orientation.
• Experience advising students and building authentic learning experiences to support student development and career aspirations.
• Teaching experience related to special education, internships, social justice and equity, teaching and learning, and research design.
•  Ability to teach a full range of elementary education courses.
• Experience developing collaborative partnerships with campus units and organizations.
