Job Duties
We are looking to hire 3 professors. This role will be a joint faculty appointment between VSU and VCU.
To establish and maintain a robust and externally funded research program that contributes significantly to the fields of cancer research including cell and molecular biology, genetics, and population sciences. This includes publishing high-impact research papers in reputable journals, securing competitive research grants, and actively collaborating with colleagues both within and outside the department and with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Additionally, applicants will be expected to mentor and engage undergraduate and graduate students in research activities and foster a dynamic and collaborative research environment within VSU and VCU.
This position will emphasize the importance of conducting impactful research, securing funding, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations as well as a robust educational environment for students. It aligns with the typical responsibilities and expectations for an assistant professor in a research-focused position.
*Virginia State University requires that faculty be appropriately credentialed to teach assigned courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. VSU demonstrates compliance with its Faculty Credentialing Policy #2301 for all applicable education, experience, licensure and certification requirements in the selection and hiring of its faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge:
• In-depth knowledge and expertise in a cancer specific area of specialization (e.g., microbiology, genetics, population sciences, cell and molecular biology).
• Proficiency in designing, conducting, and overseeing research projects.
• Ability to develop and test hypotheses, analyze data, and draw meaningful conclusions.
• Knowledge of a subject/field including current developments in teaching a discipline housed in the department
Expectations:
a) Applicant will be expected to submit at least 1 K-like career development application by the end of their first year along with smaller intramural pilot applications.
b) Applicant expected to publish 1 first author publication by the end of their second year along with 1-2 other collaborative publications.
c) Applicant will be expected to submit at least 1 R01-like application by the end of their fourth year.
Abilities:
a) Primary focus on establishing an independently funded cancer program;
b) Secondary focus on teaching and mentoring students in research.
Skills:
a) Manage and organize a research laboratory;
b) Evidence of successfully developing peer-reviewed publications.
