VDOT’s Salem District is seeking to fill a Residency Sign Crew member vacancy to serve Botetourt, Craig, Roanoke counties, and the Salem area. The successful candidate interested in joining our team to operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. You will install and repair roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s); and perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
As a sign operator, you will:
•install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices
•assist in tracking sign inventory and maintaining records
•respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
•prepare work zones and perform traffic control
•operate hand and power tools and medium to heavy equipment
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
•knowledge of work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations
•knowledge of highway maintenance, materials, and methods
•knowledge of equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
•ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
•ability to maintain electronic records and complete paperwork
•skill in general carpentry
•skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
•valid drivers license and ability to travel independently between assigned work locations
•ability to acquire CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of hire
•ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
Additional Considerations
•experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair
•valid flagger and work zone certification
•knowledge and experience with VDOT’s maintenance inventory procedures
•experience preparing reports, keeping electronic records and performing administrative tasks using computer technology

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
