Job Summary

Roane State Community College is inviting applications for qualified candidates for a Program Director and Assistant Professor position in our Mechatronics Program. The successful candidate will assist with the improvement of the 2-year Mechatronics program that is aligned with the industry needs. The Program Director’s duties will include recruiting of students into the program and teach a selection of classes. The program is designed to be both day and an evening/ weekend program. Appointment to this position may require some weekend or evening commitments. The Program Director will represent the program to internal and external constituencies and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the program. This includes scheduling of classes, searching/screening applications for part-time and full-time faculty position and maintain the teaching laboratory.
The Program Director will be based at Roane State’s Anderson County Higher Education Center, frequent off-campus travel is expected.

Job Duties

  • o Review, assess and improve the 2-year program in Mechatronics program.
  • o Teach at least two Mechatronics classes, as needed, which may include evenings and/or Saturdays.
  • o Select materials and instruments to be used in training and courses. Oversee purchase and proper handling.
  • o Develop recommendations for new equipment and training expenditures to support ongoing and developing program needs. Prepare justifications to be used in grant applications
  • o Conduct internal instructor training sessions for alignment of the Mechatronics program with similar programs at sister institutions.
  • o Coordinate scheduling of classes and staffing with faculty.
  • o Evaluate applications for faculty and recommend for hire.
  • o Observe adjunct faculty members' class/lab teaching.
  • o Conduct assessment of course and program learning outcomes, develop a major field exam and ensure programmatic accreditation with ATMAE standards.
  • o Collaborate with area high schools to develop and maintain the dual enrollment and Middle College programs.
  • o Prepare documents and self-study for program accreditation.
  • o Direct all activities associated with the Mechatronics Program.
  • o Direct the level and detail of the curriculum provided in current classes.
  • o Select textbooks and approve instructor syllabi.
  • o Develop new courses and identify program needs.
  • o Convene a program advisory group and meet at least once annually. Recruit new advisors. Use the advisory group as a resource for program direction and improvement.
  • o Coordinate soft-skills development sessions for students, identifying needed topics and enlisting guest speakers.
  • o Coordinate plant tours and enrichment programs for students.
  • o Prepare program-specific portions of new grant applications and support grant fulfillment requirements through progress reports and presentations.
  • o Observe and advise adjunct faculty on classroom teaching and laboratory practice.
  • o Create and maintain a cohesive program organization through regular team meetings.
  • o Give external presentations on the program, recruit potential students, and serve as liaison to admissions and success coach personnel in providing information to potential students about the program.
  • o Serve as advisor for all Mechatronics students. Advise on course selection, degree vs certificate, internship recommendations, study skills, etc.
  • o Coordinate the placement of students for internships and employment.
  • o Represent the Mechatronics program to external constituents and stakeholders.
  • o Coordinate the establishment of internships and apprenticeships for students. Work with companies to maximize the development of new job pipelines for graduates.
  • o Provide facility tours and presentations to potential employers of program graduates.
  • o Publicize the program through presentations at community organizations such as Rotary and employer organizations such as ETEBA.

Minimum Qualifications

• Teaching or training experience in Mechatronics related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in the Mechatronics field.
• Experience in project/grant writing, management, and reporting.
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechatronics, Physics, Engineering, Process Engineering or related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Mechatronics, Engineering, Process Engineering or related discipline.
• 10 years or more work experience in Mechatronics Technology-related positions, particularly experience in process environment.
• Teaching experience in post-secondary education programs.
• Professional Engineering License or Master’s degree in suitable engineering discipline.
• Computer skills including familiarity with Desire2Learn (or other course management software), design and process simulation software, and process control software.

• Candidate must have good oral and written communication skills, the ability to work with students of all ages and exhibit flexibility and collegiality.
• Knowledge and commitment to teaching and demonstrating safe operations in the laboratory.
• Knowledge of the mission of community colleges as it relates to career and technical education;
• Willingness to work with diverse student populations who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, and academic ability.
