Job Purpose: The Patrol Sergeant (Police Officer 2) supports students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors by monitoring activity on campus for the purpose of maintaining peace and enforcing laws and supports the college by ensuring a safe educational and work environment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs foot and vehicle patrols of the assigned campus to preserve peace and enforce the rules and regulations of the college, state, federal and local laws, provide traffic direction and planning, prevent or detect and investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents, and serves as a field training officer for new officers.
- Responds to calls for service, investigates accidents, criminal offenses, and non-criminal incidents; and takes appropriate law enforcement and investigative action. Performs safety equipment checks, participates in or conducts emergency preparedness and safety training and coordination. Trains, directs, and supervises subordinate officers.
- Plans, coordinates and participates in student engagement activities.
- Assists with planning, coordination and distribution of departmental personnel schedule, enforces departmental scheduling policy and assists with or is assigned oversight for scheduling of officers at satellite campus sites.
- Conducts investigations, seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects; develops leads and tips; searches crime scenes; collects, packages, stores, and evaluates evidence; arrests offenders; prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.
- Prepares and maintains various records, reports and filing systems. Responsible for reviewing of all submitted reports from subordinate officers for detailed accuracy prior to submitting to the Captain or Chief for final review.
- Secures and unlocks campus areas as needed, assists students, faculty, staff, and visitors as needed and otherwise protects and serves.
- May perform other duties as assigned and/or required.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma.
- Five years of experience as a sworn police officer or deputy.
- Meet or exceed the requirements of the minimum standards law as stated per TCA 38-8-106.
- Official background check is required prior to a job offer being made.
- Physical and psychological examinations are required upon acceptance of job offer. Passing these examinations is required to maintain position. Re-examination for both is required every five years.
- Must be currently Tennessee P.O.S.T certified or left a full time Tennessee P.O.S.T certified employment within the last three years and certification status must be in good standing (Note: If P.O.S.T is not current then a physical and psychological examination is required upon acceptance).
- Knowledge of campus policies and campus jurisdictional areas.
- Knowledge of city, county, and state laws and court proceedings.
- Knowledge of effective methods of investigation and police/security work.
- Ability to operate law-enforcement equipment.
- Ability to meet institutional and local area requirements related to arrest authority and weapons use.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field.
- Prior supervisory experience.

Leadership & Supervisory: Provides supervision for employees of the department in nonexempt jobs. Receives little direct supervision; however, a Captain or Chief is available when needed.
Environment & Working Conditions: Work is completed in a variety of different settings including indoor and outdoor. Incumbent is regularly exposed to different weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, wind, etc. Some work is completed in a temperature-controlled office setting with good lighting.
Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):
- Requires frequent and significant movement by foot and patrol car.
- Requires use of hands, eye, and finger coordination, must be able to handle and operate various types of police equipment to include firearms, Taser, handcuffs, baton, operation of communication equipment and/or other job tools.
- Requires occasional reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, jumping, walking and running, and crouching.
- Must occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
- Requires close, distance, and peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Requires working different shifts, some holidays, and some weekends.
