Job Summary
This is a full-time, term chemistry faculty appointment reporting to the Department of Natural Sciences Chair. The faculty member is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. At a minimum, the related activities include curriculum development, weekly office hours, academic advising, annual committee service, annual professional development and participation in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.
The faculty member is also responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus as assigned.
Job Duties
- Prepare and deliver lectures and laboratory experiences to students on topics in Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry.
- Fairly and consistently administer and evaluate laboratory activities, assignments, tests, and papers.
- Maintain accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations.
- Provide routine and mandatory updates on grades by utilizing PAWS Grades and the Southwest grade reporting system, as required by law.
- Comply with the Southwest PAWS minimum use policy.
- Report attendance utilizing the Southwest attendance reporting system, as required by law.
- Maintain ten (10) weekly office hours for students seeking advice on class work, assignments, papers, etc.
- Advise and counsel students on academic and career fields.
- Participate in departmental and college committees and provide outreach service to the community by serving in related organizations or committees.
- Attend all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.
- Participate in organized professional development annually and remain up to date on developments in the chemistry field by reading current literature, collegial collaborations, participating in professional conferences or activities, or additional academic achievements.
- May perform other duties as assign by department head or division dean.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in chemistry from an accredited institution with a major in chemistry or a master's degree and 18 graduate semester hours in chemistry.
- Resume (or CV), statement of accomplishments, and college transcripts.
- Pass a background check if selected for hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of teaching in a college or university.
- Knowledge of computer and specialized office applications (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).
- Skill in selecting and using training or instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when teaching new material.
- Ability to work with an ever-growing student population.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to convey complex chemical concepts to students.
- Ability to use smart classroom technology including artificial intelligence for classroom and laboratory instruction.
