The SSS Academic Coordinator is responsible to the TRIO Director. The primary purpose is to recruit, counsel, arrange academic and other support services for eligible DSCC students who are first generation college and/or low-income students in order for them to successfully complete their degree.
Student Support Services is part of the federal TRIO programs through the Department of Education. The program is designed to help first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities progress through college to earn a degree. The services provided include but are not limited: advising, tutoring, advice and assistance in course selection, provide information on financial aid, financial literacy education, and assist students in transferring to a four-year institution.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in the recruitment of participants that are first generation and/or low income or have a disability.
- Develop and complete individual plans for each participant and update as needed.
- Provide counseling in careers, academics, financial aid, and personal matters as needed.
- Responsible for monitoring and recording each participant’s academic progress.
- Provide participants assistance on college enrollment, financial aid, scholarships, and FAFSA.
- Provide students assistance in transferring to a four-year institution. Conduct on-site visits to four-year institutions for students that are going to transfer.
- Manage participant files (paper and electronic) to document academic, counseling, tutoring, advising, follow-up, and tracking for annual reporting requirements per the grant.
- Assist the Academic Specialist with tutoring schedule when needed.
- Serve as a Master Advisor for SSS participants
- Other duties as assigned by the director per grant needs.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrates knowledge in working with a variety of disadvantaged populations, especially high school and college students, and their respective instructors and staff for one to three years.
- Ability to work well with traditional and nontraditional college students and their instructors.
- Interpersonal skills to identify, recruit, and provide services to SSS participants.
- Understanding and knowledge of academic curriculum that will lead students to postsecondary school completion.
- Knowledge of postsecondary enrollment requirements, scholarship requirements, financial aid and FAFSA.
- Ability to provide counseling or able to make necessary referrals when needed.
- Written skills to maintain accurate records.
- Basic computer skills.
Working Conditions:
Travel may be required for college tours. The Academic Coordinator should be able to after hours if a student need arises. Working conditions will include office work and group trips for college visits.
Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s Degree in counseling, education, or related field is preferred.
- Experience working with a diverse population.
Minimum starting salary is $40,600 annually ($20.82 per hour). With additional experience pay increases to a maximum of $50,700.
