JOB SUMMARY

Cleveland State Community College invites applications for a full-time Biology Instructor to teach courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Human Biology, and related subjects. This is a 9-month faculty appointment with responsibilities in teaching, student advising, and service. The primary responsibility is high-quality teaching across multiple instructional formats (on-campus, online, hybrid) and locations (main campus, site campuses, and local high schools).

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICIATIONS

  • Master's degree or higher in a biological science or DVM, MD, DDS, DO, or Master's degree or higher with 18 graduate semester hours in any combination of the qualifying fields. Relevant courses should meet Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) standards for qualifications of faculty.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to off-site instructional locations, including high schools.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence in a comprehensive community college setting.
  • Additional training or credentialing may be required depending on course assignments or instructional methods.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Teach assigned courses using effective pedagogy and appropriate instructional materials, particularly in Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, or other related courses.
  • Maintain expertise in the biological sciences and instructional best practices.
  • Devote a minimum of 37.5 hours per week to instructional and institutional duties, including scheduled office hours and availability to students.
  • Be available for student engagement and academic support, in person and through digital platforms, depending on instructional format.
  • Teach at any of the college’s instructional sites or partner high schools, including morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours as needed.
  • Participate actively in academic department and college-wide meetings.
  • Maintain accurate academic records, including grades and attendance, and submit reports as required.
  • Follow all institutional and Tennessee Board of Regents policies and procedures.
  • Engage in professional development and faculty evaluation processes.
  • Support student recruitment, retention, and success initiatives.
  • Participate in community outreach, public service, or science education initiatives aligned with the College’s mission.
  • Advise student clubs or serve as a mentor for academic or professional development groups in the biological sciences.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching experience in Anatomy & Physiology and Biology at the college level.
  • Familiarity with active learning techniques and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Experience teaching online, hybrid, or synchronous distance learning courses.
  • Ability to advise students and support learning outside the classroom.
  • Knowledge of the mission and role of community colleges in higher education.

WORK ACTIVITIES & EQUIPMENT

  • Demonstrated competence in use of laboratory and teaching equipment relevant to biological sciences, especially human biology.
  • Familiarity with instructional technology, including LMS platforms (e.g., D2L), digital anatomy tools, and multimedia resources.
  • Ability to manage laboratory safety, supplies, and setup for human biology courses.

JOB LOCATION

The position is an on-site role at the McMinn Higher Education Center (MHEC) at Cleveland State’s off-site campus in Athens, TN. This will be the primary workplace, with occasional travel and/or teaching responsibilities to off-campus sites and local schools within the five-county service area and state-wide travel for TBR initiatives and state affiliate meetings as needed.
