Job Title: Head Women’s Basketball Coach & Fitness Center Specialist
Institution: Walters State Community College - Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)
Job Purpose: The Head Coach oversees all aspects of the varsity program, including: hires, supervises, and evaluates Assistant Coaches; identifies, recruits, and retains top prospective student-athletes; establishes a competitive schedule and coordinates team travel; responds to media requests; and promotes the team; coordinates practice planning, skill development, and designs coaching strategies which prepare the team for competition; establishes and enforces rules of conduct as well as mentors student-athletes to foster athletic, academic, emotional, and social growth; collaborates with athletic and College departments’ admissions, financial aid, medical services, academic support, student-athletic services, compliance office; guides the professional development of assistant coaches by providing expanded responsibilities, regular appraisals, and annual performance reviews; demonstrates adherence to College, conference, and NJCAA rules and regulations while overseeing activities of Assistant Coaches, staff, and student-athletes to verify compliance with a clear mandate to self-report any violations; supports community service efforts by involving the coaching staff as well as student-athletes.
Essential Job Functions:
- Leads the women’s basketball program regarding coaching tactics and responsible for all women’s basketball players. Also provides assistance with recruiting efforts both during the basketball season and in the off-season. Schedules transportation and food for players and staff during games which require travel. Provides tutoring and academic support for student athletes if required.
- Assumes responsibility for the fitness center on campus, including cleaning weights, coaching/instruction on form and technique, picking up weights after team workouts, and leading team exercises.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in any field of study
- 10 plus years of experience as a player and/or coach in basketball
- Ability to move weights in order to clean up the fitness center or demonstrate proper form/technique to students
- Demonstrated involvement with team/community outreach
- Strong communication skills and ability to persuade prospective student athletes to attend Walters State.
- Documented abilities managing budget and scholarship finances.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a coach at the high school or collegiate
- Master’s degree

Leadership& Supervisory: The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and management of the performance of student athletes on the women’s basketball team. The employee in this position can perform most tasks without consulting others, though resources, guidelines, and a direct supervisor are available for consultation if necessary. Work is checked largely for progress towards the completion of objectives.
Environment & Working Conditions:
- Due to the nature of the position, exposure to extreme heat, humidity, noise, and temperature changes are possible. Occasional exposure to extreme cold during winter season.
- Bodily injury or strain could occur from improper use of fitness equipment or weights.
Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):
- Hours can vary depending on the scope and nature of an event, such as tournaments or games at distant locations.
- Working and travel on weekends can occur based on event schedules.
- Ability to lift and move weights in fitness center.
